German artist Cornelia Konrads creates mind-bending site-specific installations in public spaces, sculpture parks and private gardens around the world. Her work is frequently punctuated by the illusion of weightlessness, where stacked objects like logs, fences, and doorways appear to be suspended in mid-air, reinforcing their temporary nature as if the installation is beginning to dissolve before your very eyes. One of her more recent sculptures,Schleudersitz is an enormous slingshot made from a common park bench, and you can get a great idea of what it might be like to sit inside it with this interactive 360 degree view.
What you see here only begins to sratch the surface of Konrad’s work. You can see much more on her website. All imagery courtesy the artist.

This month marked a significant milestone for one of the world’s most famed art fairs as China hosted Art Basel Hong Kong for the first time. With over half of the galleries exhibiting at the fair originating from Asia and Asia-Pacific, Art Basel shined a bright international light on hundreds of artists who were relatively unknown outside of their respective regions.
One such artist was Jakatara-based sculptor Ichwan Noor with Mondecor Jakarta who arrived with this giant sculpture of a 1953 Volkswagen Beetle that, combined with polyester and aluminum, has been morphed into a perfect sphere. Apparently this is one in a series of spherical (and cubical!) vehicles by the artist, but he also works in a variety of other subjects including anatomical forms. To see more coverage of Art Basel Hong Kong, head over to Juxtapoz that has two galleries of photos, Part 1 and Part 2. (via Japan TimesSee-ming Lee)

I Guarantee You’ve Never Seen Anything Like This In A House. Step Inside… Right Meow.

If you like your cats, you buy them collars and treats. If you love them, maybe you’ll go the extra mile and buy a big kitty tree. But if you really love your cats (like, maybe a little too much) you can buy them a “cat heaven” from Goldtatze.de (which means “gold paw”). A “cat heaven” is exactly what it sounds like.
It’s sad to admit, but I’m actually a little jealous of any cat that gets to live in an apartment with his own kitty heaven. My dad didn’t even build me a treehouse. If you want to see more amazing Goldtatze.de designs, check out their Facebook page.

Wal-Mart reports on its corporate website that it receives more than 245 million customers and members per week at its stores in countries around the world.
This week, the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, which was founded by Wal-Mart heiressAlice Walton, said it expects to welcome its 1-millionth visitor at its location in Bentonville, Ark.
Will there be balloons and confetti?  Since opening to the public in late 2011, the Crystal Bridges Museum has sought to become a destination spot for local and international art enthusiasts as well as students of all ages. Unlike most major metropolitan art museums, Crystal Bridges boasts free admission, which has no doubt helped the museum in the attendance department.
A Crystal Bridges news release this week stated that the museum has exceeded its projected annual attendance figures. The museum said it had initially estimated 150,000 to 300,000 visitors per year. In the first 12 months it was open, it reported 650,000 visitors.
Of its 1 million visitors so far, the museum said that 64% were from Arkansas, and about 20% came from six nearby states: Missouri, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Louisiana and Mississippi.
It said the remaining 16% hailed from other parts of the U.S. and abroad.
To put Crystal Bridge's attendance figures in perspective, the Los Angeles County Museum of Artreported attendance of about 1.3 million visitors for the 2011-12 fiscal year. New York'sMetropolitan Museum of Art -- the biggest art museum in the nation -- saw more than 6 million visitors for the calendar 2012 year.

I am honored and proud to have put this piece together.  It’s a great human interest story that transcends...even if you don’t live in tornado territory.
George A. Spiva Center for the Arts' "On the Other Side" tornado-themed exhibit features various styles of artwork including some made from tornado debris.

"On the Other Side," was designed to allow art to contribute to Joplin's healing process for both the artists who created the pieces on display and the many coming to view the unique exhibit.
